Lake is essentially a playable Hallmark movie, but with better writing and a bit more grit. You play as Meredith, a software developer who returns to her hometown to deliver mail for two weeks. There is no combat, no timers, and no way to 'lose.' It is pure atmosphere and character development.
For the right kid—one who loves a good story or needs a way to decompress—it's a gem. Just be aware of the ESRB rating; the dialogue doesn't hold back on profanity, which feels a bit jarring against the beautiful, sunset-soaked lake scenery. If you're okay with some 'R-rated' language in a 'G-rated' setting, it's a great pick.
