Look, Kevin Can Wait is the kind of show that exists purely to fill airtime between commercials. The critical consensus is brutal for a reason - it's lazy, uninspired, and brings nothing new to the tired family sitcom format.
With a 28% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.6/10 on IMDb, this isn't a hidden gem that critics missed. It's just not good. The premise of 'retired cop adjusts to family life' could work, but the execution is so formulaic and uninspired that even Kevin James fans were disappointed.
Is it safe? Sure. Will it traumatize anyone? No. But in an era where you have access to Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, Schitt's Creek, and dozens of other genuinely funny, well-written family-friendly sitcoms, why would you waste time on this?
The show was cancelled after two seasons (and controversially killed off the wife character to bring in a new love interest, which tells you something about the creative desperation). Skip it and watch literally anything else.
