Screenwise Verdict

This is the book you buy when your 5-year-old asks where babies come from and you realize you have no idea how to explain it without either lying or oversharing.

Robie Harris and Michael Emberley nailed the nearly-impossible task of explaining human reproduction to preschoolers in a way that's honest, age-appropriate, and not weird. The illustrations show anatomically correct bodies without being sexualized. The text answers real questions kids ask without dumbing it down or using cutesy euphemisms that just create more confusion.

The genius move is the bird and bee characters who react to the information the way kids might—curious, surprised, sometimes squeamish. It normalizes the full range of responses and keeps the tone light even when discussing serious topics.

Common Sense Media parents rave about it, and for good reason. This book does what many parents struggle to do: treat children's bodies and reproduction as normal, interesting biology rather than something shameful or taboo. It's not about "the talk"—it's about building ongoing body literacy from an early age.

The only caveat: make sure you're actually ready to have this conversation, because once you read this book, your kid will know how babies are made. No take-backs.

Age Fit

Best for ages 4-8, when kids start asking direct questions about bodies and babies. The straightforward approach works perfectly for this developmental stage when curiosity is high but abstract thinking is still limited. By age 9+, most kids are ready for the next book in the series (It's So Amazing!).

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

92

Delivers age-appropriate, medically accurate information about bodies and reproduction in a reassuring, non-sexualized way. The tone is straightforward and positive, treating children's natural curiosity with respect. Comic relief characters (bird and bee) acknowledge the full range of emotions kids might feel, normalizing both curiosity and awkwardness without shame.

Imaginative

68

While the book uses engaging cartoon characters and lively illustrations to make anatomy accessible, it's fundamentally educational rather than imaginative. The content is grounded in biological facts rather than creative storytelling. That said, the approach of using a curious bird and squeamish bee to voice children's reactions shows thoughtful, creative pedagogy.

Safe

88

Vetted by science, health, and child development experts. The illustrations are clinical and age-appropriate, not sexualized. Common Sense Media reviews confirm straightforward drawings that aren't inappropriate. The book addresses potentially sensitive topics (reproduction, anatomy) in exactly the way parents would want for young children—factual, positive, and normalized. Minor deduction only because some families may want to control timing of these conversations themselves.

Enriching

95

Exceptional educational value. Fills a critical developmental need by answering questions preschool through early elementary kids actually ask, using scientifically accurate information. Helps children feel 'proud, knowledgeable, and comfortable about their own bodies.' Builds body literacy and healthy attitudes toward reproduction and family structures. The 4.7 Amazon rating and glowing Common Sense Media reviews confirm parents find it genuinely useful.
