The Post-Scream Boom
To understand I Know What You Did Last Summer, you have to understand the landscape of 1997. Scream had just revitalized the horror genre by being meta and clever. Last Summer was the industry’s attempt to do it again, but with more earnestness and a lot more rain gear. It was written by Kevin Williamson (who also wrote Scream), but it lacks the self-awareness that made Ghostface so iconic.
Instead, what you get here is a classic urban legend structure. It’s the story of the 'Hookman' brought to life with a cast of then-superstars like Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar. For a parent, it's a nostalgia trip; for a teen, it's an interesting look at how horror functioned before every character had a tracking device in their pocket.
The Gore Factor
While it’s not a 'torture porn' movie by any means, the violence is mean-spirited. The killer uses a fisherman's hook, and the movie doesn't shy away from the mechanics of how that would actually work. There’s a specific scene involving a trunk full of crabs and a dead body that remains a high-water mark for 90s gross-out reveals. If your kid is sensitive to body horror or sharp objects, this is an easy pass.
Why it still works
Despite the mediocre critic scores, the movie works because it taps into a very real fear: the mistake you can't take back. The first act is a masterclass in building anxiety, as the four leads realize they've ruined their lives in a single second of distracted driving. That part of the movie is actually more 'enriching' than the slasher stuff that follows, as it forces the audience to wonder how they would react under that kind of pressure.
