Rebooting a classic is always a gamble, but Home Sweet Home Alone makes a fundamental error in its character dynamics. In the original, Kevin was an underdog defending himself against genuine threats. Here, Max Mercer is a wealthy, somewhat obnoxious kid who unleashes a torrent of physical pain on Pam and Jeff—a couple who aren't even professional criminals. They're just trying to get back a doll they think he stole so they don't lose their house.

Slapstick without the Soul

The traps are there, but the context is broken. When you watch a guy get his head set on fire in the original, it's funny because he's a 'Wet Bandit.' When it happens here, it feels like watching a middle-class mom get tortured by a bratty kid. The movie tries to pivot at the end to a 'we're all friends' resolution, but after 90 minutes of watching Max try to hospitalize these people, the sentimentality falls flat.

If you're looking for a family movie night, the 1990 original or even the first sequel are much better bets. They understand that for the violence to be funny, the stakes have to feel right.
