WISE Score
The iconic kids' magazine turned into a high-energy car ride podcast packed with jokes, riddles, and audio games.
If you remember reading Highlights in doctor waiting rooms, the podcast adaptation brings that exact same mix to audio: quick riddles, silly stories, puzzle games, and clean humor.
It shines as backseat entertainment. Tim Kubart and Juanita Andersen keep the pacing snappy enough that pre-K and early elementary kids stay hooked without needing an iPad screen. It is safe, bright, and genuinely good at building listening comprehension skills while you drive.
Best for ages 5 to 10. Younger kids love the jokes and interactive sounds, while middle-schoolers will find the bubbly host tone a bit too juvenile.
Exceptionally positive tone centered on kindness, curiosity, and silliness, hosted by upbeat presenters with zero snark or mean-spirited humor.
Uses audio-only storytelling, wordplay, riddles, and sound-effect guessing games that encourage kids to picture scenarios and play along.
Pure child-friendly audio with zero mature themes, scare elements, or inappropriate language.
Strengthens listening comprehension, vocabulary, and verbal reasoning through active problem-solving and wordplay.
Translating a visual print magazine into an audio format usually ends up as either a dull read-aloud or a noisy audio experiment. Highlights Hangout hits the right middle ground by leaning into what kids' podcasting does best: sound-effect guessing games, quick host banter, and rapid-fire segments.
Hosts Tim Kubart and Juanita Andersen treat the microphone like a live children's show stage. For parents trying to cut down on screen time during school runs or errands, the show offers enough interactive prompts—guessing mystery audio, solving word puzzles, calling in listener jokes—that kids naturally participate out loud.
Unlike narrative audiobooks that require long-term focus across multiple chapters, Highlights Hangout is designed for bite-sized listening. The 20-to-30 minute episodes are broken into 3-minute chunks, making it easy to pause when you pull into the grocery store parking lot. It is light on heavy themes and heavy on lighthearted fun, serving as a reliable go-to for early grade schoolers.
