Is Hex Vet scary for sensitive younger kids?

Not really. While a rabbit has 'strange eyes' and magical creatures get sick or act wild, the tone stays cozy, warm, and humorous throughout.

What grade level is Hex Vet best for?

It is written for grades 3 to 6 (ages 8 to 12). Strong 2nd grade readers can easily handle it, and the graphic novel panels keep it accessible for struggling 4th or 5th graders.

How many books are in the Hex Vet series?

The main series includes Hex Vet: Witches in Training (Book 1) and Hex Vet: The Flying Surgery (Book 2), both written and illustrated by Sam Davies.

Does Hex Vet work for reluctant readers?

Yes. The illustrations carry a lot of the story, dialogue bubbles keep text chunks manageable, and the story moves quickly at under 120 pages.

Screenwise Verdict

Sam Davies' Hex Vet is a charming, gentle fantasy graphic novel that trades epic battles for medical problem-solving and animal care. Following apprentice witches Nan and Clarion as they staff a clinic for magical beasts, it offers a sweet entry point into middle-grade fantasy without the grim darkness or heavy violence found in larger series.

It is short, visually engaging, and grounded in kindness, making it a great pick for 8- to 12-year-olds who love animals or need an approachable bridge to independent reading.

Age Fit

Ideal for kids ages 8 to 12 (grades 3 to 6), especially those who love animal stories or graphic novels like The Tea Dragon Society.

Fast visual pacing means fast readers will blaze through the 80 to 112 pages in a single sitting.

Conversation Starters

"If you were a vet for magical creatures, which mythical animal would you want to treat first?"
"How did Nan and Clarion use teamwork when their magical potions didn't solve the problem right away?"
"What is the difference between taking care of a pet and taking care of a wild animal?"

Deep Dive

Fantasy focused on care, not combat

Most middle-grade fantasy arms young protagonists with swords or spellbooks to fight dark lords. Hex Vet takes a refreshing left turn by giving its main characters stethoscopes and bandages. Clarion Wellspring and Nan Artifice spend their days running the desk, taking vitals, and figuring out how to treat sick monsters. The stakes feel real to a kid—helping an injured animal—without escalating into world-ending violence.

Built for middle-grade visual readers

With short page counts (80 pages in book one, 112 in book two) and clear paneling, Sam Davies crafts a page-turner for kids transitioning out of early chapter books. The art does heavy lifting, showing emotion and body language in ways that help struggling decoders keep pace with the plot. If your kid enjoyed The Tea Dragon Society or animated shows like Steven Universe, this cozy graphic novel series lands in that exact sweet spot.
