Screenwise Verdict

If you’re a romance fan, this is your Roman Empire. Rachel Reid managed to write a hockey book that even people who hate sports will binge-read in a single night. It’s funny, the banter is elite, and the emotional stakes of being a closeted superstar in the NHL feel incredibly real.

That said, parents: do not buy this for your 13-year-old who just discovered the NHL on TikTok. This is explicit, graphic adult fiction. It’s 'Safe' in the sense that the relationship is healthy and supportive, but it’s 'Unsafe' for a kid's eyes because of the high heat level. Keep it on your own Kindle and enjoy the ride.

Age Fit

Strictly 18+. This is a 'wait until you're out of the house' book for the kids. It's fantastic for adults, but the heat level is way beyond 'Young Adult.'

WISE Breakdown
Wholesome
76

While the 'enemies' part of the romance involves a lot of sniping, the actual relationship development is emotionally healthy, focusing on mutual support and two people learning to be vulnerable despite massive professional pressure.

Imaginative
62

It doesn't reinvent the sports romance wheel, but the specific dynamic between the stoic Shane and the chaotic Ilya is incredibly distinctive and well-voiced.

Safe
12

This is explicit adult fiction. It contains graphic, frequent sexual content and strong language. It is entirely inappropriate for children or younger teens to stumble upon.

Enriching
84

Offers deep insight into the psychological toll of the closet in professional sports and the complexity of maintaining a private identity under the glare of international fame.

Parent Info

Why It Might Be Great

  • Ilya and Shane have better chemistry than almost any couple in modern romance; their banter is genuinely funny.
  • It’s a masterclass in the 'enemies-to-lovers' trope that actually earns the payoff.
  • The book handles the heavy reality of being closeted in the NHL with real grace and empathy.
  • Ilya Rozanov is a top-tier 'lovable jerk' character who is impossible not to root for.

What to Watch For

  • This is smut. We're talking graphic, explicit sex scenes, not just 'fades to black.'
  • Heavy use of profanity throughout, fitting the locker room and high-intensity setting.

Conversation Starters

  • "Why do you think Ilya uses humor and arrogance as a shield?"
  • "How does the pressure of a professional sports career change the way people have to handle their private lives?"
  • "Is it possible to truly love someone you consider a 'rival' in every other part of your life?"
