Screenwise Verdict

This is what a good holiday picture book looks like: specific enough to teach something real, universal enough to resonate beyond its immediate audience, and genuinely clever without being precious about it.

The upside-down gimmick works because it's rooted in actual geography—one cousin in the US with snow and winter, one in Australia with beach and summer, both celebrating Hanukkah. The friendly competition format keeps it fun, and reviews confirm it never gets mean or loses its warmth.

It's culturally specific to Jewish families, which is a feature not a bug—kids need books that reflect their own traditions and books that teach them about others. This does both jobs well. Recent (2023), award-winning, and with strong parent/educator reviews. Solid choice for the holiday shelf.

Age Fit

Designed for PreK through 2nd grade, this hits the perfect developmental window for understanding family connections, geography basics, and cultural celebrations. The friendly competition angle keeps it engaging for the upper end of that range.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Celebrates family connection and cultural sharing across hemispheres. The friendly cousin competition never turns mean—it's genuinely warm and models healthy relationships. Reviews consistently note the upbeat, cheerful tone throughout.

Imaginative

The concept of cousins celebrating the same holiday in opposite seasons (summer in Australia vs. winter in the US) is genuinely clever. Invites kids to think about how geography and culture intersect, and how traditions can look different while meaning the same thing.

Safe

Picture book for PreK-Grade 2 with zero content concerns. No violence, scary elements, or mature themes. Straightforward holiday story celebrating Jewish tradition and family.

Enriching

Teaches kids about celebrating Hanukkah in different hemispheres and climates, offering genuine cultural education. Shows that traditions can be adapted while maintaining meaning. The 'sharing one's culture with someone who cares to learn' theme adds depth beyond the surface holiday story.
