Screenwise Verdict

Getting Over It is a masterpiece of intentional design that stands in direct opposition to the 'dopamine-hit' culture of modern mobile gaming. It doesn't want your money, it doesn't want your data, and it doesn't want to make you feel like a winner—at least not at first. It wants you to struggle.

For the right kid, this is a rite of passage. It’s a hilarious, infuriating, and ultimately rewarding lesson in grit. If your kid is the type to enjoy a 'Souls-like' challenge or appreciates weird, indie art, this is a must-play. Just maybe put a rugged case on the tablet before they start.

Age Fit

Best for ages 10 and up. It requires a level of emotional maturity to handle the repeated loss of progress without a total meltdown, plus the controls are deceptively difficult.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

The game is intentionally designed to be frustrating and 'hurt' the player, which is the opposite of a soothing experience, though the narrator's calm philosophical musings provide a weirdly zen backdrop to the chaos.

Imaginative

A completely unique, surrealist physics mechanic that has spawned an entire sub-genre of 'foddian' games. It's weird, original, and visually distinct.

Safe

It's a premium, single-player experience with zero ads, zero social chat, and zero predatory monetization. The only safety risk is your kid throwing the iPad across the room.

Enriching

A brutal but effective lesson in resilience and the 'Sisyphus' nature of effort. It forces players to confront failure and decide whether to keep going.

Why It Might Be Great

Resilience training in its purest form; the game is literally about falling down and getting back up.
Zero distractions from the gameplay—no loot boxes, no daily login bonuses, and no 'energy' meters.
Philosophical depth via the narrator, who quotes literature and shares insights about the nature of frustration as you play.
Skill-based mastery that rewards focus and fine motor control rather than just fast reflexes.

⚠

What to Watch For

The frustration is the point; if your kid struggles with emotional regulation, this will be a nuclear-level trigger.
Progress can be wiped out in seconds, which can lead to genuine distress for younger or more sensitive players.
The narrator can be a bit cynical or mocking, which adds to the mental challenge of the game.

Conversation Starters

"How did it feel when you fell all the way back to the start?"
"Do you think the narrator is trying to help you or make you want to quit?"
"Why do we find games like this fun even when they're so annoying?"
"What's your strategy for staying calm when the hammer doesn't go where you want it to?"
