Let's be real: Flash Gordon is almost unwatchable for modern kids. Yes, critics have come around to appreciating its camp value (83% on Rotten Tomatoes), and yes, the Queen soundtrack is legitimately iconic. But the acting is wooden, the effects look ancient, the plot is tissue-thin, and the whole thing moves with the energy of a disco ball slowly deflating.
If you grew up with this movie, you might have nostalgia goggles strong enough to power through. But showing it to kids raised on Marvel and Pixar? They'll be checking their phones within 15 minutes. The production design is genuinely creative in a psychedelic way, and there's something to be said for showing kids what pre-CGI filmmaking looked like, but that's more of a film history lesson than entertainment.
The safety concerns are minimal—it's campy violence and mild sensuality, nothing shocking. But the enrichment value is near zero, and the wholesome messaging is too buried under cheese to land. This is a curiosity, not a recommendation. If your teen is into cult films or your family loves MST3K-style viewing experiences, maybe. Otherwise, skip it and just play the Queen soundtrack.
