Screenwise Verdict

This is one of the better ways to introduce 9/11 to young children—it's honest without being traumatic, and focuses on the helpers rather than the horror. Kalman's art style softens the heavy subject matter while still treating it with respect.

The story itself is genuinely compelling: a retired fireboat getting a second chance to serve is the kind of narrative arc that resonates with kids and adults alike. It's not preachy, not overly sentimental, just a well-told true story.

The 2005 publication date means it's now 20 years old, but the content hasn't aged poorly—if anything, it's become more valuable as a historical bridge for kids who weren't alive in 2001. Parents should definitely preview it and be ready to provide context, but it's a solid, enriching choice for the right age range.

Age Fit

Best for ages 4-8, particularly kids learning about 9/11 for the first time or studying NYC history. The Guided Reading level M and Lexile AD600L make it accessible for early readers, though younger kids will benefit from having it read aloud with parent guidance. Likely too young for kids over 9.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

A gentle, hopeful true story about community, rescue, and second chances. Handles 9/11 with age-appropriate sensitivity—focuses on heroism and helping rather than dwelling on tragedy. Models perseverance (friends saving the boat from scrap) and civic duty (the fireboat answering the call). Emotionally balanced tone that's respectful without being heavy-handed.

Imaginative

Maira Kalman's distinctive watercolor illustrations bring personality to an inanimate boat, making it feel like a character with a story arc. The concept of a retired fireboat getting a second life sparks curiosity about machinery, history, and urban infrastructure. However, it's ultimately a straightforward narrative nonfiction piece—more informative than wildly creative—so it doesn't reach the highest imaginative heights.

Safe

Addresses 9/11 in a way that's appropriate for young children (ages 4-8 per multiple sources). Describes 'something so horrible happened that the whole world shook' and 'roaring flames' but avoids graphic details, death, or traumatic imagery. The focus is on the rescue response, not the attack itself. Parents should know it's a 9/11 book going in, but there are no surprise disturbing elements. Very safe for its intended audience with proper context.

Enriching

Teaches real history about NYC, firefighting, and 9/11 in an accessible way for young readers. Builds empathy and understanding of community resilience. Introduces concepts like obsolescence, restoration, and civic service. The true story angle adds weight and meaning. Strong Amazon rating (4.8/5) suggests it resonates with families. Offers genuine learning opportunities while remaining engaging.
