Screenwise Verdict

Fact-checking sites are the 'vegetables' of the internet. Your kid is never going to choose them over a TikTok feed, but they are essential for digital survival. Think of these as a reference library, not a destination.

If you have a teen who is starting to get into political debates or sharing memes that feel 'off,' sitting down and walking through a FactCheck.org post together is a massive win. It moves the conversation from 'I'm right, you're wrong' to 'Let's look at the evidence.' It’s less about the specific fact and more about the habit of checking.

Age Fit

Best for 12 and up. Middle school is when the social media firehose starts, and they need these tools to manage it. Younger kids can do the 'Find the Fake' quizzes on Internet Matters, but the big fact-check sites are too dense for them.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

These sites model intellectual honesty, objective analysis, and the value of truth over clicks. They're the antithesis of the 'hot take' culture that dominates most kid-facing feeds.

Imaginative

This is analytical, logic-driven territory. It's about grounding reality, not escaping it. While it sparks curiosity about how the world works, it's not 'imaginative' in the creative or narrative sense.

Safe

FactCheck.org is ad-free and non-profit. PolitiFact is highly reputable. The content is safe, though it deals with real-world political and social conflict which can be intense for younger kids.

Enriching

This is the gold standard for media literacy. Teaching a kid to use these tools is essentially giving them a permanent filter for the internet's noise.

Why It Might Be Great

Builds skepticism by showing kids the 'why' and 'how' behind viral misinformation.
Non-partisan approach helps kids see through political spin regardless of the source.
Practical tools like reverse image search or source-checking become second nature.
Free and accessible resources that don't lock the truth behind a paywall.

What to Watch For

The content is dry and academic. Don't expect a kid to scroll this for fun; it's a tool, not entertainment.
Fact-checking often touches on heated political topics (elections, health, war) that might require some parent-guided context.

Conversation Starters

"What was the last thing you saw online that seemed too crazy to be true?"
"Why do you think people share fake news even when they aren't sure it's real?"
"If you were trying to trick someone online, how would you do it? (And how would we catch you?)"
"Do you think the 'Truth-O-Meter' on PolitiFact is actually fair?"
