Screenwise Verdict

If you came here looking for Ash Williams, a chainsaw hand, and a 'Groovy' catchphrase, you are in the wrong place. This 1992 film (properly known as Evil Dead Trap 2: Hideki) has absolutely no relation to the Sam Raimi series. It is a grim, surrealist Japanese slasher about a projectionist losing her mind.

For a parent, the verdict is simple: it's a hard pass for the family. It’s not 'fun' scary; it’s 'need-a-shower' scary. The combination of sexual violence and extreme gore puts it well outside the realm of even a 'mature' teen watch.

Age Fit

This is a hard 18+. Between the graphic gore and the sexualized nature of the violence, there is zero reason for a minor to be watching this.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

This is a bleak, disturbing slasher film centered on insanity and murder. There are no positive role models or emotionally healthy themes here.

Imaginative

As a piece of surrealist J-horror, it uses inventive, dream-like visuals and a non-linear descent into madness that is stylistically distinct, even if it's unpleasant.

Safe

Contains extreme graphic gore, sexualized violence, and deeply upsetting psychological themes. It is entirely inappropriate for children.

Enriching

Only of interest to film historians or extreme horror buffs studying 90s Japanese cinema. For everyone else, it’s just a grim experience.

⚠

What to Watch For

Extreme Body Horror and graphic practical effects that are intended to shock and disgust.
Sexual Violence and disturbing gender dynamics are central to the plot and imagery.
Psychological Rot as the main character's sanity unravels, which can be genuinely upsetting rather than 'fun' scary.

"Why do you think the filmmakers chose a movie theater as the primary setting for a haunting?"
"Does the surrealism make the violence feel more or less real to you?"
