Eternal Sunshine is one of those rare films that's both critically adored and genuinely deserving of the praise. It's smart without being smug, heartbreaking without being manipulative, and weird in all the right ways.
That said, it's not for kids. The R rating is earned—sex, nudity, drugs, language—and the emotional weight is real. This is a film for older teens (16+) and adults who are ready to sit with some big questions about love, memory, and whether we'd be better off forgetting the people who hurt us.
If your high schooler is into thoughtful, artsy films and can handle mature content, this is a great pick. Just don't expect a feel-good rom-com. It's beautiful, but it'll leave you a little bruised.
