Screenwise Verdict

Let's be real: this is not an app your kid is going to open and enjoy. The EPA Student Center (School IAQ Assessment) is a specialized tool for school administrators to conduct indoor air quality audits—think checklists, ventilation protocols, and radon testing guidance. It's the digital equivalent of a facilities management manual.

That said, it's part of the EPA's broader educational ecosystem, which does include kid-friendly games, videos, and activities about environmental topics. If your child is doing a project on air quality or environmental health, the EPA's website has genuinely good resources. But this specific 2015 app? It's a niche utility that's likely outdated and possibly no longer functional.

Safe? Absolutely. Educational? Sure, if you're the one doing the IAQ assessment. Fun for kids? Not even close. Skip this one unless you're literally a school facilities manager, in which case, hey, free government tool.

Age Fit

Technically rated for pre-K to 4th grade (based on the broader EPA Kids site), but in reality this specific app is for adults—teachers, facilities managers, or administrators conducting school air quality assessments. Kids might find the broader EPA educational games interesting, but not this particular utility app.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Government-run educational app with zero commercial pressure, no ads, and a genuinely helpful mission (indoor air quality in schools). The tone is straightforward and informative—no manipulation, no hype, just practical environmental health information. It's earnest in the best possible way.

Imaginative

This is a utilities/reference app focused on indoor air quality assessments for schools. It's a checklist and guidance tool, not a creative platform. There's no building, exploration, or open-ended play—just forms, checklists, and EPA protocols. Functionally useful but imaginatively inert.

Safe

As safe as digital media gets: .gov domain, no ads, no data collection for marketing, no social features, no in-app purchases, no user-generated content. The web search confirms it's designed for pre-K through 4th grade with age-appropriate language. Only reason it's not 100 is that the 2015 iOS app may have outdated security protocols compared to modern standards.

Enriching

Genuinely educational content about environmental health—air quality, ventilation, radon, asthma triggers—that aligns with school curricula. The web results show it includes games, quizzes, and activities that extend learning. Real-world skill building around environmental awareness. Loses points because it's dry, technical, and honestly more useful for teachers/administrators doing IAQ assessments than for kids directly engaging.

Why It Might Be Great

Completely ad-free, data-safe government resource with zero commercial agenda
Teaches real environmental health concepts (indoor air quality, radon, asthma triggers) that matter for kids' daily lives
Part of a broader EPA educational ecosystem with games and activities for different grade levels
Could be genuinely useful if your kid is doing a school project on environmental health or if you're a teacher/facilities manager

What to Watch For

This is NOT a kid-friendly app—it's a technical assessment tool designed for school staff doing IAQ audits
From 2015, so it may not work properly on modern iOS devices or may have been discontinued
Zero entertainment value—think Excel spreadsheet meets OSHA manual, not Duolingo meets National Geographic Kids

Conversation Starters

"Did you know the air inside buildings can be way more polluted than outside? What do you think causes that?"
"What kinds of things at school might affect the air quality in your classroom?"
"If you were in charge of keeping the school healthy, what would you check first?"
