Earth to Echo arrived in 2014 trying to capture that E.T. magic through a smartphone lens, and... it mostly didn't work. The found-footage gimmick was already tired, and the execution feels like a pale imitation of better kids-meet-alien stories.
That said, it's harmless. If you have a 7-10 year old who loves adventure stories and hasn't seen the classics yet, this could work as a rainy afternoon watch. The friendship themes are solid, there's nothing inappropriate, and some kids genuinely enjoyed it.
But let's be real: with a 47% audience score and 5.7 on IMDb, this is not a hidden gem. It's a forgettable mid-2010s kids' movie that most families will watch once and never think about again. If you're looking for quality family sci-fi, you're better off with The Iron Giant, Lilo & Stitch, or even just rewatching E.T.
