The Gacha Trap
Released in 2015, Dokkan Battle has survived for over a decade because it is incredibly good at one thing: the dopamine hit of the 'pull.' While the gameplay involves tapping colored orbs to launch attacks, the real game happens in the 'Summon' tab. This is where players spend Dragon Stones—which can be earned slowly through play or bought quickly with a credit card—to try and get the newest, strongest characters.
For a kid, this is a lesson in probability and disappointment. The 'Featured' characters usually have a drop rate of around 5%, meaning it is entirely possible to spend fifty dollars and walk away with nothing but digital junk.
The Grind vs. The Wallet
If your kid is playing without spending money, they are 'F2P' (Free to Play). This is a badge of honor in the community, but it requires a massive time investment. The game is a 'grind-fest,' requiring players to repeat the same levels hundreds of times to 'Awaken' their characters.
It's a great game to play while half-watching a show or sitting on a bus, but it's not 'deep' play. It's a collection hobby. If they love the characters, they'll love seeing the art and the animations. Just make sure the App Store password isn't saved on the device, because the temptation to 'just buy one more multi-summon' is the entire business model.
