If you're here because your kid finished Dog Man and wants more 'Dog Diaries,' keep moving. This is a 2020 reproduction of a 1905 novel by Sarah Macnaughtan. It’s a charming, witty, and incredibly slow-paced diary of an officer recovering from war wounds in a tiny English village. It is 'wholesome' in the most literal sense, but it’s about as far from modern kid-lit as you can get.

The 'Dog' in the title is a metaphor for the narrator's self-pity about his leg injury. There is no talking dog. There is no slapstick. It’s mostly just observations about local ladies and tea parties. For a very specific type of history-buff teenager, it’s a hidden gem. For everyone else, it’s a recipe for a nap.
