Screenwise Verdict

Let's be brutally honest: this movie is terrible. Not just inappropriate for kids (obviously), but genuinely bad cinema that even adults struggled to enjoy.

The numbers tell the story: 10% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, 21 on Metacritic, and a dismal 2.4/5 on Letterboxd. Even the IMDb score of 5.9 is generous. This is Robert De Niro—a legendary actor—at his absolute lowest, doing a spring break comedy that makes American Pie look sophisticated.

The premise is tired, the execution is lazy, and the humor relies entirely on shock value without actual wit. It's the kind of movie that gives R-rated comedies a bad name. If you're looking for adult comedy, there are literally hundreds of better options. If you're looking for family viewing, run far away.

The only reason this scores above zero is because it's technically a completed film that some humans presumably enjoyed. But honestly? Life's too short for movies this bad.

Age Fit

This is strictly 18+ content, and even then, it's a tough sell. The R-rating is well-earned with graphic sexual content, nudity, and heavy substance use. Not remotely appropriate for teens despite the Common Sense 17+ suggestion. Adults who enjoy raunchy comedies might tolerate it, but with a 10% critic score and 44% audience score, most won't even enjoy it.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

This movie is the antithesis of wholesome. It centers on crude humor, heavy drug and alcohol use, sexual content throughout, and Robert De Niro's character being intentionally offensive and inappropriate. The 'foul-mouthed grandfather' descriptor is putting it mildly. Models terrible behavior with zero redemptive qualities.

Imaginative

Road trip comedy formula executed with zero creativity. Spring break hijinks, bar fights, karaoke—it's every tired comedy trope without a single original idea. The premise of 'uptight guy loosens up' has been done a thousand times better. No creative spark whatsoever.

Safe

Extremely unsafe for family viewing. Contains graphic sexual content, full nudity, heavy drug use, constant profanity, and inappropriate behavior throughout. Common Sense Media rates it 17+. This is R-rated content that pushes boundaries even for that rating. Zero surprises here—it's exactly what you'd expect from a movie called 'Dirty Grandpa.'

Enriching

Offers nothing of value. No meaningful character growth, no life lessons beyond 'be wild and irresponsible.' The critical reception (10% on Rotten Tomatoes, 21 on Metacritic) confirms this is bottom-tier comedy. Even as pure entertainment, it fails—audiences gave it only 44%. This is cinematic junk food without even tasting good.

Why It Might Be Great

If you're an adult who finds crude humor hilarious and don't care about plot, character development, or basic filmmaking competence, this exists
De Niro and Efron commit fully to the awfulness, so there's that
Might work as background noise at a party where everyone's already had too many drinks

What to Watch For

Graphic sexual content, full nudity, heavy drug and alcohol use throughout—this is hard R-rated
Constant profanity and offensive behavior presented as comedy
Zero educational or developmental value; this is purely shock-value humor
Critics universally panned it (10% RT) for good reason—it's genuinely bad even as adult comedy

Conversation Starters

"Why do you think critics hated this movie so much? What makes comedy actually funny versus just offensive?"
"This movie shows grandpa-grandson bonding through wild partying. What are healthier ways families can connect across generations?"
"When does 'edgy' humor cross the line into just being mean or inappropriate?"
