Do we need to watch 'Patriot Games' first?

Not really. While it's technically a sequel with the same cast, the plot is entirely standalone. You won't be lost if you start here.

How violent does it actually get?

It's PG-13, so no guts or gore, but the violence is 'heavy.' People die in explosions and tactical ambushes. The Medellin alleyway scene is the one to watch out for—it's intense and feels very real.

Is it too boring for a modern kid?

If they only watch 10-second TikToks, yes, they'll struggle. But if they liked 'Knives Out' or other mystery-heavy movies, the 'detective' work Jack Ryan does will keep them hooked.

Is there any 'romance' content?

Almost none. Jack Ryan is a devoted family man. There's no nudity or sexual situations to worry about.

Screenwise Verdict

Clear and Present Danger is the gold standard for the 'Dad Thriller.' It’s smart, ethical, and features Harrison Ford doing what he does best: looking worried while doing the right thing. It holds up surprisingly well because it relies on character tension rather than just CGI spectacle.

If your kid is ready for movies that treat them like adults, this is a great entry point. It’s a story about why the truth matters, even when the most powerful people in the world want to bury it. Just be prepared to explain what a floppy disk is.

Age Fit

Best for 12 and up. Younger kids will likely be bored by the heavy focus on CIA bureaucracy and budget meetings, but middle schoolers will dig the 'detective' aspect of Ryan's job.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Jack Ryan is the ultimate 'do the right thing' hero. His integrity in the face of a corrupt presidency is a solid model, even if the world he occupies is full of drug lords and backroom betrayals.

Imaginative

It is a standard, high-quality political procedural. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it uses the wheel to drive a very tight plot.

Safe

Standard 90s PG-13 action. There are explosions and gunfights—most notably a very intense ambush in a narrow alley—but it avoids gore and gratuitous sex.

Enriching

Excellent for discussing the ethics of executive power, the 'war on drugs,' and why paperwork and printers are sometimes more powerful than missiles.

Why It Might Be Great

Harrison Ford is at his peak here, playing a hero who is smart, vulnerable, and genuinely pissed off by injustice.
The plot actually matters—it's a thriller that rewards you for paying attention to the details rather than just waiting for the next explosion.
It's a masterclass in competence porn, showing people who are incredibly good at their technical jobs navigating a crisis.
The Medellin ambush sequence remains one of the best-directed action set pieces of the 1990s.

What to Watch For

The alleyway ambush is loud, chaotic, and features characters getting hit by rockets and gunfire; it’s a big jump in intensity compared to the rest of the film.
The 90s technology (floppy disks, dot-matrix printers) might be a source of accidental comedy for kids raised on iPhones, though the tension still works.
It's a long movie at 141 minutes—if your kid isn't into slow-burn political maneuvering, they'll check out by the second act.

Conversation Starters

"Does the President have the right to break the law if he thinks it will protect the country?"
"Why did Jack Ryan feel he had to go to Colombia himself instead of just staying at his desk?"
"How would this story be different today with modern surveillance and social media?"
"What does it mean to have 'clear and present danger' in a political context?"

Deep Dive

The Last of the Great Paperwork Thrillers

There was a specific window in the 90s where movies about guys in suits looking at computer monitors were actually thrilling. Clear and Present Danger is the peak of that era. Unlike the modern Jack Ryan series on Amazon, which leans heavily into the 'super-soldier' trope, the Harrison Ford version of the character is a literal analyst. He’s a nerd with a high-level security clearance who happens to have a spine of steel.

Why it Still Works

The movie succeeds because the stakes aren't just 'save the world'—they're personal and moral. When Ryan discovers his own colleagues are running a shadow war in Colombia, the conflict isn't just about shooting bad guys; it's about the betrayal of the American system. The scene where Ryan breaks into a secure computer and has a 'typing duel' with a corrupt official while a laser printer slowly reveals the evidence is unironically more suspenseful than most modern car chases.

A Lesson in Integrity

For a parent, this is a great 'co-engagement' pick because it sparks real questions about ethics. Ryan is a guy who is told to 'play the game' and refuses. In a media landscape full of anti-heroes and cynical protagonists, there’s something refreshing about a hero who is genuinely offended by a lie. It’s a long sit, but the payoff—where Ryan finally confronts the President in the Oval Office—is one of the most satisfying endings in 90s cinema.
