This is Hiaasen doing what he does best: Florida weird meets sharp social commentary, packaged for middle schoolers. The reality TV satire feels fresh even now (maybe especially now), and the writing is genuinely funny without trying too hard.
The domestic violence subplot is the main content consideration—Tuna's running from her abusive, drunk father, and it's not just background noise. Hiaasen handles it with care and doesn't make it gratuitous, but it's real and present throughout. For kids ready for that complexity, it adds emotional depth.
The animal wrangling details are legitimately educational, the Everglades setting is vivid, and the whole thing moves fast enough to keep reluctant readers engaged. It's the rare middle-grade book that's actually as funny as it thinks it is.
