Charlie the Wonderdog is the definition of a 'mid' movie. It’s not going to win any Oscars, and it won't be a family classic you revisit every year, but it's a perfectly functional distraction for a rainy afternoon.
The plot is thin enough to see through—timid kid, super dog, evil cat—but the animation is bright and the stakes are low. If your kid is in a 'talking animals' phase, they'll be obsessed for exactly three days before forgetting it exists.
This is firmly for the 4 to 8-year-old set. Any older and the 'poorly written' plot will start to show its cracks; any younger and the alien abduction scene might be a confusing touch-point.
It centers on a classic boy-and-his-dog bond with clear-cut 'good vs. evil' stakes. While the neighbor's cat is 'sinister,' the emotional core is about Danny finding his footing with his superpowered best friend.

Charlie the Wonderdog doesn't do much to stand out from the pack, and as some critics have noted, the story is probably only fit for the very youngest audiences.
If you have a 9 or 10-year-old, they are going to be bored. The humor relies heavily on slapstick and easy gags that don't land with the same sophistication as a Pixar or Dreamworks flick. However, for a 5-year-old who just wants to see a Golden Retriever fly, it’s gold.
One thing to note is the 'sinister' cat subplot. While it's played for laughs, some sensitive kids might find the 'destroy humanity' stakes a bit much, even if it is being plotted by a tabby. But overall, it's a safe, harmless bet for a family movie night where you don't want to think too hard.
