Castle in the Sky is Miyazaki's first masterpiece—a soaring adventure that's equal parts steampunk wonder and earnest kid-hero story. Nearly 40 years later, it still works. The hand-drawn animation is stunning, the world-building is rich, and the themes (environmentalism, the corrupting nature of power, the courage of ordinary people) land without preaching.
The main concern is violence: there's a lot of gunfire, explosions, and peril. It's not graphic or gory, but it's persistent enough that Common Sense Media and most parents recommend age 8+. If your kid has handled other action-adventure films (think early Marvel, other Miyazaki), they'll be fine. If they're sensitive to loud noises or scary chases, maybe wait a bit.
This is a film that respects kids' intelligence and doesn't talk down to them. It's also genuinely entertaining for adults—so if you're looking for a family movie night pick that everyone will actually enjoy, this is a strong contender.
