Does Captain Marvel have superpowers in this book?

No. The story takes place entirely during Carol Danvers' first year in Air Force flight school in the 1980s, long before she acquires alien powers. It is a human origin story focused on military aviation.

Is there any explicit content, swearing, or graphic violence?

No. The tension revolves around stressful flight training exercises, competitive peer dynamics, and institutional sexism in a male-dominated 1980s Air Force setting. It is clean and appropriate for middle-grade readers.

Does a reader need to know the Marvel movies to follow the plot?

Not at all. Recognizing Carol Danvers and Maria Rambeau from the Marvel Cinematic Universe adds fun context, but the novel functions cleanly as a standalone story about two friends in flight school.

Is this book suitable for a 10-year-old reader?

Yes. The book carries an Accelerated Reader level around 5.5, making it an accessible read for upper elementary and middle school students who are comfortable with light YA themes.

Screenwise Verdict

If your kid picks this up expecting Captain Marvel to punch a starship, set expectations early. Higher, Further, Faster is a grounded military drama about Carol Danvers and Maria Rambeau clawing their way through Air Force flight school in the 1980s.

Author Liza Palmer keeps the focus on pilot grit, aviation mechanics, and the quiet weight of being two women in a rigid institution. It reads much more like realistic middle-grade or early YA fiction than a comic book blockbuster.

For middle schoolers who enjoy character-driven stories, flight lore, or Marvel backstories, it is a clean, solid book that trades flash for human substance.

Age Fit

Best for ages 10 to 14. Middle schoolers who like Marvel characters, aviation, or grounded character stories will get the most out of this read.

Deep Dive

Beyond the Superpowers

Most tie-in novels for major superhero franchises play it safe with low-stakes comic fights. Higher, Further, Faster takes a different route by ditching superhero antics entirely. Set years before Carol Danvers acquires alien powers, the novel treats military aviation with detail and respect.

A Model of Real Partnership

The heart of the book is the alliance between Carol and Maria Rambeau. In an environment designed to rank trainees against each other, their bond relies on mutual respect and shared endurance. It gives young readers a concrete example of female solidarity where personal ambition does not require undermining a peer.

Reading Fit

With an Accelerated Reader level around 5.5, the prose is straightforward and digestible for upper elementary and middle school students. The themes of 1980s military bias are presented clearly without graphic language or heavy violence, making it an easy recommendation for middle-grade readers stepping into YA territory.
