Screenwise Verdict

Calculator Plus is a legacy utility app that still earns its keep by being more user-friendly than the native calculators on most devices. It's not 'fun'—it's a tool—but for a kid who is frustrated by the tiny buttons and 'vanishing' numbers of the stock iPhone app, this is a solid upgrade.

Be aware that in the world of 2026, 'calculator apps' are often used as a disguise for hidden photo vaults. This specific app is legit, but if you see a second calculator app on your kid's phone that they seem protective of, that's a different conversation entirely. For this one, just pay the few bucks to kill the ads if they're using it daily for school.

Age Fit

Perfect for anyone from 1st grade through adulthood. If they're old enough to have homework or a budget, they're old enough to use this.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

It is a math tool. It doesn't get much more wholesome than basic arithmetic and budgeting. No social feeds, no drama, just numbers.

Imaginative

It's a calculator. Unless your kid is into 'calculator art' (07734, anyone?), there is zero creative or imaginative play here.

Safe

Generally safe, but the free version is notorious for banner ads and 'Pro' upsells that can be a nuisance for younger kids.

Enriching

It helps with math homework and financial literacy, but it's a utility, not a teacher. It solves the problem for you rather than explaining the 'why'.

Why It Might Be Great

Visible history tape allows kids (and adults) to scroll back and see where they made a typo in a long string of numbers.
Giant buttons make it much harder to 'fat-finger' a calculation, which is a genuine win for younger kids still learning digital precision.
Memory functions are clearly laid out, making it a decent sandbox for teaching how M+ and MR actually work.
Multi-window support on iPad is great for doing homework side-by-side with a digital textbook.

⚠

What to Watch For

Ad-supported friction: The free version has banner ads that can be distracting or lead to accidental clicks into the App Store.
Subscription/Pro pushes: It will frequently ask you to upgrade to remove ads or get the 'Grand Total' feature.

Conversation Starters

"Why is it helpful to see the history of the numbers you just typed instead of just the final answer?"
"If you're at the store with $20, how could the 'percentage' button help you figure out if you have enough for that toy on sale?"
"Do you think using a calculator makes you better at math, or does it just make math faster?"
