Let's be crystal clear: this is not a movie for kids, teens, or family movie night. It's a psychological horror film dressed in ballet clothes.
That said, for adults? Black Swan is a masterpiece of its genre. Aronofsky creates a visually stunning descent into madness, and Portman's performance is legitimately one of the best of the 2010s. The film uses ballet as a brilliant metaphor for perfectionism and the duality of control versus chaos.
But it's DARK. Self-harm, eating disorders, sexual content, hallucinations, body horror—it's all here, and it's all intense. Common Sense Media says 17+, and honestly, I'd push that to 18+ or even older depending on the person's comfort with psychological horror.
If you're an adult who appreciates sophisticated thrillers and can handle disturbing content, this is worth watching. If you have a teen who's interested, have a serious conversation first about the content. And if you have younger kids? Absolutely not. Hide the remote.
