Black Mass is a dark, heavy, and deliberately unglamorous mob biopic. It skips the cinematic romanticism of The Godfather or the frantic energy of Goodfellas in favor of a clinical examination of corruption, extortion, and murder in 1970s and 80s South Boston.
Johnny Depp turns in a chilling, icy performance as Whitey Bulger, but the film is less about cool gangster antics and more about how FBI agent John Connolly enabled a monster under the guise of taking down the Italian Mafia. It works as a grim crime history lesson, but it is completely unsuitable for kids.
