Beethoven is the cinematic equivalent of a well-meaning but slightly musty hand-me-down sweater. It's got all the right family-movie ingredients—lovable dog, grumpy-dad-gets-a-heart, slapstick hijinks—but it's served up with early '90s pacing that feels like watching paint dry to kids raised on Pixar and Marvel.
The villain plot is surprisingly dark (evil vet wants to experiment on dogs) for what's otherwise a gentle comedy, which creates some tonal whiplash. And while there are sweet moments of family bonding, the whole thing is so predictable you can set your watch by it.
Here's the truth: unless your kid is absolutely dog-obsessed or you're feeling nostalgic, there are dozens of more engaging, imaginative family films that won't have everyone checking their phones by minute 30. It's not bad, it's just... fine. And in the age of infinite streaming options, 'fine' rarely makes the cut.
