This is peak Disney Renaissance—the animation, music, and storytelling that made a generation fall in love with musicals. Yes, there are some dated elements (the whole imprisonment-leads-to-love thing is ethically murky), but the film actually handles it better than you might remember: Belle doesn't develop feelings until Beast genuinely changes his behavior and frees her.
The scary moments are real—this isn't gentle Moana-level Disney. The Beast's initial rage, the wolves, and Gaston's mob are legitimately intense. But for kids ready for that level of peril, this is enriching stuff: themes of inner beauty, redemption, standing up to toxic masculinity, and the power of literacy and curiosity.
Does it hold up? Shockingly well. The animation is gorgeous, the songs are bangers, and Belle remains one of Disney's best princesses. Modern kids still connect with it, though you might need to have some conversations about consent and healthy relationships afterward. Worth the watch if your kids can handle the scary bits.
