Screenwise Verdict

This is a perfectly nice book. It's sweet, it's gentle, it teaches good values about gratitude and community, and it introduces Jewish traditions in a warm, accessible way. The intergenerational relationship is lovely.

But let's be real: it's also a bit sleepy. Published in 2005, it feels like a generation ago in terms of pacing and energy. Modern picture books tend to be snappier, funnier, more visually dynamic. This one is earnest and straightforward—a folktale adaptation that wears its moral on its sleeve.

If you're specifically looking for Jewish-themed books or values-based stories about giving and gratitude, this is a solid choice. But if your kid is used to Dog Man or Elephant & Piggie, they might find this one a little slow. It's the kind of book that works best as a bedtime story or a quiet moment, not a high-energy read-aloud.

Good for what it is, but not must-have unless you're building a specific collection.

Age Fit

Best for ages 4-8, especially kids who enjoy gentle, values-focused stories or families exploring Jewish traditions. The Lexile 480L makes it accessible for early readers, though the slower pacing may not hold attention for kids used to more dynamic contemporary picture books.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

A gentle intergenerational story about a boy and his grandfather, modeling gratitude, community care, and the joy of giving. The tone is warm and age-appropriate, with themes of kindness and sharing woven naturally into the narrative. The close relationship between Benny and Grandpa provides a healthy emotional anchor.

Imaginative

While the story adapts a traditional folktale with a child protagonist, the imaginative scope is modest. Benny's literal interpretation of thanking God by leaving bagels is charming but straightforward. The bakery setting and ritual of weekly offerings provide some sensory detail, but the narrative doesn't invite much creative exploration or open-ended play beyond the story itself.

Safe

Completely safe for young readers. No violence, scary content, or inappropriate themes. The religious element (Jewish faith and synagogue setting) is presented matter-of-factly and warmly, suitable for interfaith families or those exploring different traditions. No surprises or content that would catch parents off-guard.

Enriching

Strong values-based content exploring gratitude, generosity, and community connection. The intergenerational relationship offers a model of respect and learning. The Jewish cultural elements provide exposure to traditions and practices. The story's gentle wisdom about giving and receiving has meaningful takeaways, though the didactic nature is fairly transparent. Lexile 480L makes it accessible for early readers.

What to Watch For

The pacing is slow and contemplative—modern kids raised on high-energy picture books may find it a bit sleepy
Religious content is Jewish-specific (synagogue, thanking God) which is great for exposure but worth noting if you're looking for secular stories
Published in 2005, so the illustrations and storytelling style feel a generation old
The moral is fairly transparent and didactic—it's a teaching story, not a subtle one
