Screenwise Verdict

Animals is a dark, cynical look at what happens when the shiny veneer of a political family is stripped away in real-time. It’s a kidnapping thriller that trades in grit and desperation rather than hope or heroism.

Between the 17+ rating and the abysmal audience reception, this isn't a 'must-watch' for anyone. It's a date-night skip unless you're a completionist for L.A. noir or political dramas. For parents, the central premise of a child in peril makes this a heavy, stressful watch that offers very little payoff.

Age Fit

This is an adult thriller, full stop. With a target age of 17+ and heavy themes of kidnapping and corruption, it's not for a family movie night.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

The plot centers on kidnapping and parents engaging in criminal behavior ('getting their hands dirty') to save their son. It's the opposite of a model of kindness or cooperation.

Imaginative

A standard high-stakes political thriller. The 'mayoral candidate' angle adds some flavor, but the ticking-clock kidnapping trope is well-worn territory.

Safe

Common Sense Media rates this for 17+. Kidnapping is a massive psychological trigger for kids, and the film includes criminal underworld elements that aren't for children.

Enriching

Might offer some cynical insight into political ambition vs. family, but with a 21% audience score, it's likely more of a gritty genre exercise than a deep ethical study.

Why It Might Be Great

Ticking-clock tension that keeps the stakes high from the first ten minutes.
Explores the moral compromise of people who usually spend their lives obsessing over their public image.
The gritty L.A. backdrop serves as a character itself, showing a side of the city far from the campaign trail.

What to Watch For

The kidnapping of a child is the central hook; skip this if that's a visceral trigger for you or your family.
Expect 'getting dirty' to involve criminal activity, likely violence, and morally grey choices by the protagonists.
The 21% audience score is a flashing red light—early viewers are finding this one more frustrating than thrilling.

Conversation Starters

"Would you break the law to save someone you love?"
"Why do you think the candidate was so worried about people seeing the 'side of their lives' they tried to hide?"
"Does political ambition make people better or worse parents?"

Deep Dive

A Campaign of Desperation

Animals tries to bridge the gap between a high-stakes political drama and a visceral kidnapping thriller. The setup is classic: a mayoral candidate who has poured every cent and every ounce of integrity into a campaign suddenly finds that his most precious asset—his son—has been taken.

The film leans heavily into the 'how far would you go?' trope. Instead of the typical 'parent with a special set of skills' hero, we get a couple who are forced to navigate the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles using only their desperation and the dirty secrets they’ve spent years burying.

Why the Low Score?

The 21% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes suggests that the execution doesn't live up to the premise. Thrillers like this live or die on their pacing and the logic of their characters' choices. When a movie about a kidnapping fails to connect with the audience, it's usually because the tension feels manufactured or the characters are too unlikable to root for.

If you're looking for a tense family-centric thriller that actually lands the plane, you're better off looking elsewhere. Animals seems to get bogged down in its own cynicism, leaving viewers more exhausted than entertained.
