Adapting George Orwell's Animal Farm is tricky under the best circumstances, and this 2026 release fumbles almost every element. Critics hated it, audiences found it tedious, and the final cut lacks both the biting satire of the book and the visual energy needed to hold a modern kid's focus.
The core fable remains intact: neglected farm animals drive out their human master, establish an egalitarian commune, and watch helplessly as the pigs rewrite the rules until power corrupts everything. But rather than sharpening Orwell's warning about propaganda and creeping totalitarianism, the film plods through the motions with wooden pacing and clumsy character work.
If your middle schooler needs to understand Animal Farm for English class, give them the original novella or an audio edition instead. Sitting through this particular adaptation feels more like an assignment than an entertaining afternoon.
