If you’re watching it in 2026, you’re doing it for nostalgia or because you’ve already seen every other rom-com on Netflix. It’s dated, the jokes are hit-or-miss, but Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance is genuinely legendary and almost justifies the runtime on its own.
Best for 13+. While the 'gross-out' humor might appeal to younger kids, the central plot is a mid-life romantic crisis that won't interest them, and the sexual innuendo is aimed squarely at teens and up.

To understand Along Came Polly, you have to remember the era when Ben Stiller was the king of the 'anxious guy in an embarrassing situation' subgenre. Following Meet the Parents, this movie doubled down on that energy. The plot is paper-thin: Reuben (Stiller) is a risk analyst whose wife cheats on him on their honeymoon, leading him back to Polly (Aniston), a girl he knew in middle school who is now his polar opposite.
Modern audiences might find the pacing a bit sluggish and the 'gross-out' humor—mostly centered around Reuben’s irritable bowel syndrome—more exhausting than hilarious. We’ve moved past the era where 'man has diarrhea' was the peak of cinematic comedy. Furthermore, the chemistry between Stiller and Aniston is serviceable but never quite sparks the way the best rom-coms do.
The real reason to revisit this is Philip Seymour Hoffman. Playing a former teen star who is still trying to live off the fumes of his one hit movie, he provides a masterclass in comedic timing. Whether he's aggressively playing basketball ('Let it rain!') or falling on his face, he brings a level of commitment that the rest of the script doesn't quite deserve. If you're going to watch it, watch it for him.
