Screenwise Verdict

A forgotten 2003 Canadian sci-fi comedy, Alienated turns the standard alien abduction story into a raunchy suburban sitcom. After the Taylor family gets snatched by extraterrestrials, they return home dealing with bizarre physical side effects and heightened sex drives rather than government conspiracies.

It is dated, niche, and built entirely around adult humor. If you are looking for family-friendly sci-fi or a wholesome watch, look elsewhere. This belongs squarely in the late-night catalog for adult genre completionists.

Age Fit

Strictly for adults and older teens. The entire premise hinges on adult sexual humor and mature themes following an alien abduction.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Centers on dysfunctional family dynamics, explicit sexual humor, and raunchy adult themes following an alien encounter.

Imaginative

Offers an unusual spin on sci-fi abductions by focusing on suburban domestic fallout rather than space battles.

Safe

Contains pervasive adult humor, sexual themes, and crude language that make it unsuitable for unexpected family viewing.

Enriching

Purely a late-night cult genre comedy with little educational or constructive value for younger audiences.

What to Watch For

Explicit sexual humor and mature themes serve as the primary engine for the show's plot.
Crude language and raunchy situations appear consistently across both seasons.

Conversation Starters

"Why do sci-fi stories often use alien encounters to highlight normal human flaws?"
"How do low-budget Canadian TV shows from the 2000s compare visually to modern streaming series?"

Deep Dive

A strange artifact of early-2000s Canadian TV

Alienated ran for two seasons on Space, Canada's speculative fiction channel, pairing suburban sitcom tropes with raunchy sci-fi setups. Filmed in Victoria, British Columbia, the show skips special effects and space battles in favor of awkward living-room arguments and low-budget character comedy.

Why it is not for younger viewers

Unlike standard family sci-fi, the narrative engine here is mature content. The aftermath of the alien encounter manifests as unwanted physical changes, behavioral shifts, and explicit sexual hyper-arousal among family members. The tone is dark comedy, making it entirely inappropriate for middle schoolers or pre-teens looking for an adventure show.

For adults curious about obscure Canadian television history, it is a quirky period piece. For everyone else, it is easily skipped in favor of modern genre storytelling.
