Is Adipurush appropriate for younger kids under 10?

Not really. The three-hour length alone will bore younger viewers, and the constant dark CGI battle scenes, scary demon creatures, and kidnapping plot line can be intense for kids under 12.

Why did this movie receive such bad reviews?

Critics and audiences overwhelmingly criticized the film's poor computer-generated special effects, dark visual redesigns of traditional characters, awkward dialogue, and lack of emotional depth compared to the original Ramayana.

Is there any explicit content or gore in the movie?

There is no nudity or sexual content. The violence consists of fantasy army battles, archery combat, and monster fights, which feature stylized impacts rather than graphic blood and gore.

Are there better versions of the Ramayana to watch with kids?

Yes. The 1992 Japanese-Indian co-production Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is widely considered a much better, warmer, and more visually beautiful animated introduction for families.

Screenwise Verdict

If you are looking for an inspiring or visually compelling adaptation of the Ramayana, keep moving. Adipurush takes one of the world's great literary epics and drowns it in muddy, cutscene-quality CGI and three hours of noisy fantasy brawling.

While the underlying message remains focused on good overcoming evil, the movie strips away almost all emotional resonance. The characters feel flat, the pacing drags, and the visual style looks more like a dark fantasy video game than a legendary myth.

For families interested in introducing their kids to ancient epics, there are far better animated and live-action options available. Skipping this one won't leave anyone missing out.

Age Fit

Best for kids 12 and up who already know the Ramayana story or want to see a big-budget mythological fantasy, though the lengthy runtime and terrible special effects make it a tough sell for most audiences.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

At its core, this is a legendary tale of heroism, loyalty, and devotion from the Ramayana, but the heavy emphasis on stylized dark battles and aggressive character designs detracts from the underlying spiritual tone.

Imaginative

While adapting epic Hindu mythology leaves room for grand world-building, the visual execution relies on uninspired CGI, repetitive visual effects, and muddy monster designs.

Safe

Features extended action scenes, CGI monster battles, decapitations, fantasy violence, and intense kidnapping themes, though without explicit gore or sexual content.

Enriching

The source material carries immense cultural and ethical weight, but this adaptation flattens the character depth and philosophical nuance into a tedious action film.

What to Watch For

Grueling three-hour length: The film stretches its simple rescue plot across nearly 180 minutes of dark, repetitive fight scenes.
Constant fantasy violence: Swords, arrows, monster fights, and dark demon armies fill most of the screen time, which might overwhelm younger viewers.
Intentional stylistic deviations: The portrayal of Lankesh and his kingdom strays heavily from traditional iconography, featuring modern tactical gear and dark fantasy tropes.

Conversation Starters

"How does Raghava show leadership when faced with an overwhelming army?"
"Why do you think the filmmakers chose to make Lanka look dark and industrial instead of golden and prosperous?"
"What differences did you notice between this movie's version of the characters and the stories you've heard before?"

Deep Dive

A Legendary Epic Lost in the Visual Effects Machine

The Ramayana has been retold for thousands of years through poetry, theater, television serials, and animation. When Adipurush was announced, expectations were high for a modern, big-budget cinematic adaptation that could showcase ancient Indian tradition to a global audience. What landed on screen instead was a stark lesson in how over-reliance on green screens and rushed visual effects can dismantle a narrative.

From the opening act, the film prioritizes dark aesthetic choices and endless CGI battles over character development. Prince Raghava (Prabhas) and Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan) are reduced to action figures moving through green-screen backgrounds that feel detached from any grounded reality. The legendary golden city of Lanka resembles a dark industrial fortress, complete with giant bats and metal armor that feels ripped from an entirely different genre.

The Watchability Factor

Beyond content concerns, the primary hurdle for families is pure engagement. Clocking in at nearly three hours, the movie struggles to maintain momentum. The dialogue falls flat, the fight choreography repeats itself, and the uncanny-valley digital effects make it difficult to stay invested in the drama.

If your goal is cultural education or storytelling, classic animated versions like the 1992 Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama offer dramatically better pacing, artistic care, and emotional warmth. Adipurush ends up as an unintentional study in visual effects misfires rather than a memorable movie night.
