Where to Play

Screenwise Verdict

Ace Combat 7 is the rare game that feels like a 'big kid' experience without the 'adult' baggage. It’s a polished, high-adrenaline flight action game that respects the player's intelligence. It doesn't rely on loot boxes or infinite grinds; it just asks you to be a better pilot.

For parents, it’s a great alternative to the standard first-person shooter. You’re still 'shooting,' but the focus is on physics, positioning, and mechanical mastery rather than gritty violence. It’s a 'cool' game that you won't feel the need to hover over.

Age Fit

Perfect for ages 10 and up. The 'Teen' rating is mostly for the complexity of the political plot and the military context, but the actual gameplay is accessible to anyone with decent thumbstick coordination.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

It's a military thriller focused on heroism and technology. While it involves war, it's 'clean' combat—you're blowing up machines, not people. The narrative is heavy on melodrama and political intrigue rather than grit or cynicism.

Imaginative

The 'Strangereal' setting is a masterclass in world-building, creating a fictional geography that feels lived-in. Customizing aircraft with different parts and weapons encourages a level of tactical experimentation.

Safe

Very low on typical 'red flag' content. No gore, no sexual content, and mild language. The main safety variable is the unmoderated voice chat in multiplayer, which is common to all online gaming.

Enriching

It’s a gateway drug for aviation and STEM. It teaches the basics of flight physics (pitch, yaw, roll) and requires serious focus and situational awareness. The story also touches on the ethics of drone warfare and AI.

Why It Might Be Great

Aviation Hook: If your kid is into machines, planes, or engineering, this is the gold standard for making flight feel fast and powerful.
Flow State: The gameplay requires intense concentration, which is great for building focus. When you're threading the needle through a narrow canyon, nothing else exists.
Visual Spectacle: Even in 2026, the 'trueSKY' technology holds up. Flying through actual volumetric clouds that affect your plane's handling is a legitimate thrill.
VR Experience: On PlayStation, the VR missions are some of the most immersive 'cockpit' experiences ever made.

What to Watch For

Difficulty Spikes: Some missions have strict time limits or tricky objectives (like flying under radar) that can be genuinely frustrating for younger players.
Multiplayer Chat: Like any competitive game, the online lobbies can have the usual trash talk. You can easily mute it, and you should.
DLC Temptation: There are plenty of 'extra' planes for sale in the digital storefront. They aren't necessary to win, but the 'cool' factor is a strong pull for kids.

Conversation Starters

"Why do you think the world is moving toward drones instead of manned fighter jets in the story?"
"Which plane is your favorite to fly, and is that because of how it looks or how it handles?"
"The story talks a lot about 'borders'—do you think technology makes physical borders more or less important?"
"What was the hardest mission so far, and how did you change your strategy to beat it?"
