If your picture of anime is either loud battle shonen or awkward fan-service tropes, this show completely resets the board. Produced by Madhouse, it follows Mari, a high schooler terrified of wasting her youth, who teams up with three other girls to reach a Japanese research station in Antarctica.
The series treats both the physical journey and the personal stakes with immense respect. Nothing is handed to the characters: they take convenience-store shifts, practice emergency survival drills in the mountains, and get thoroughly seasick on an icebreaker plow across open seas. It is funny, grounded, and emotionally heavy in the best way.
Watch it with a middle schooler or teen who feels stuck in a routine. It is one of the tightest 13-episode complete stories in contemporary television.
