Netflix loves putting three famous actors in a glossily lit house and calling it a movie. A Family Affair pairs Nicole Kidman as a grieving writer mom, Zac Efron as an egomaniacal action star, and Joey King as the miserable assistant caught in the middle. The setup promises messy farce, but the script plays it curiously safe, drifting between awkward slapstick and surprisingly heavy drama.
As a family watch, it stumbles. The PG-13 rating brings explicit profanity, casual tequila swilling, and a prolonged bedroom scene that makes watching with a younger teen an exercise in staring intently at your phone.
If an older teen wants background noise starring familiar faces, it works as low-stakes streaming filler. Otherwise, it's pretty skippable.
