Zero Days is the best cyber-thriller that isn't actually fiction. It's a deep dive into Stuxnet, the worm that proved code could do the work of a bomb. For a parent, it’s a great way to pivot a kid's interest in 'hacking' toward the actual, messy reality of global security.
It’s dense, smart, and a bit scary in its implications. If your teen is always on Discord or tinkering with scripts, this is the most productive two hours they’ll spend in front of a screen this month.
Best for 13 and up. It’s perfect for the kid who’s into coding, history, or political thrillers, but it's likely too dry and complex for anyone under middle school age.
It's a serious documentary about international sabotage and cyberwarfare. While not 'fuzzy,' it models high-level investigative journalism and intellectual curiosity.
The film uses clever visual effects to represent abstract computer code and digital pathways, making the invisible world of malware feel tangible and cinematic.
Very safe for its target teen/adult audience. No graphic violence or sexual content, though it deals with heavy geopolitical tension and some strong language in interviews.
A masterclass in modern history and tech literacy. It explains complex concepts like 'zero-day vulnerabilities' and the ethics of state-sponsored hacking with incredible clarity.
Most movies about hackers involve someone in a hoodie typing 'ACCESS GRANTED' while green text scrolls down a screen. Zero Days is the antidote to that nonsense. It treats the Stuxnet virus like a forensic crime scene, peeling back the layers of how the US and Israel managed to physically melt Iranian centrifuges without firing a single bullet.
What makes this worth watching with a teen is the way it frames the internet as a battlefield. We talk a lot about 'online safety' in terms of strangers and social media, but this film covers the structural safety of the world we live in. It explains why a 'Zero Day'—a software vulnerability that the creator doesn't know about yet—is the most valuable currency in the modern world.
Director Alex Gibney manages to make spreadsheets and code repositories feel like a ticking clock. Even though we know the outcome, the reveal of how the worm 'escaped' into the wild is genuinely chilling. It’s a great companion piece to movies like The Social Network or WarGames, providing the real-world backbone to the fiction kids usually consume.
