Is this a board book or a standard picture book?

It is primarily released as a hardcover picture book. While it's durable for a book, it's not a 'chew-proof' board book, so you might want to keep it for supervised reading if your toddler is still in the 'everything goes in the mouth' phase.

Does it only cover common pets like cats and dogs?

No, that's the best part. It starts with the familiar but branches out into wild animals, which gives you a chance to teach them about creatures they won't see in the neighborhood.

How long does it take to read?

If you just read the text, it's a 5-minute job. If you use the interactive questions and dive into the backmatter facts, you can easily stretch it to 15 minutes of solid engagement.

Is the backmatter too advanced for a 3-year-old?

The main text is perfect for a 3-year-old. The backmatter is written at a slightly higher level, intended for a parent to summarize or for an older sibling to read. It's 'bonus' content that keeps the book relevant as they get older.

Screenwise Verdict

Who Meows? is exactly what a high-quality nonfiction picture book should be: engaging, visually stunning, and smarter than it needs to be. It avoids the 'Old MacDonald' clichés by introducing a wider variety of animals and actually explaining the science of their sounds in the backmatter.

If you have a kid in that sweet spot where they want to participate in the reading process, this is a winner. It is a great example of building the language comprehension side of the reading rope through rich, interactive conversation.

Age Fit

Perfect for the 2–5 crowd. Toddlers will love the animal sounds, while preschoolers will actually engage with the 'why' in the back of the book.

What to Watch For

It is a standard picture book, so if you are looking for a indestructible board book for a heavy-handed chewer, check the edition carefully before buying.
The 'Who Meows?' title is a bit of a bait-and-switch—it covers way more than just house cats, which might confuse a very literal two-year-old for a second.

Conversation Starters

"Which animal sound in here was the hardest for you to make?"
"Why do you think a cheetah chirps like a bird instead of roaring like a lion?"
"If you were an animal, what kind of sound would you make when you're happy?"
"Which of these animals would you most want to see at the zoo?"

Deep Dive

Robin Page has a long history of creating science-adjacent picture books that don't talk down to kids, often collaborating with the late Steve Jenkins. Who Meows? carries that torch forward. The art style—likely cut-paper or digital collage—gives the animals a tactile quality that holds a toddler's attention much better than flat, generic cartoons.

What makes this worth the shelf space is the interactive loop. For a two-year-old, the win is simply identifying the cat or the hippo. But for a four-year-old who is starting to ask 'why' about everything, the backmatter provides real answers. It explains that sounds aren't just random; they are tools for communication, warning, and survival.

From a literacy perspective, this is a 'comprehension' heavy-lifter. By asking questions and waiting for a response, you're teaching the turn-taking of conversation and the predictive nature of reading. It’s a simple tool, but in the hands of a parent who's willing to get loud and make some weird animal noises, it's one of the best ways to spend ten minutes before naptime.
