War Horse is technically excellent—Spielberg at his most earnest, with gorgeous visuals and a sweeping score. The story of a boy and his horse separated by WWI has real emotional heft and teaches important lessons about loyalty, war's cost, and cross-cultural humanity.
But let's be real: this is a tough watch. Multiple horses die on screen in ways that will devastate animal-loving kids. The war violence, while not gratuitously gory, is relentless and grim. And at nearly 2.5 hours of deliberate pacing, modern kids raised on Marvel quips will struggle to stay engaged.
The 74% RT scores and 7.2 IMDb rating suggest it's well-made but not universally beloved. Common Sense Media's 13+ rating is spot-on—this needs emotional maturity. If you've got a history-loving teen who can handle heavy themes, it's enriching. But if you promised your 10-year-old a fun horse movie? You've made a terrible mistake.
It's a good film. It's just not a fun film. Know the difference before you press play.
