From Picture Books to Spooky Chapters
Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown have built a mini-empire on the back of making kids feel slightly unsettled. Unsettling Salad! is the second entry in their chapter book series, and it’s a smart pivot. While the original picture books like Creepy Carrots were about Jasper Rabbit, this series shifts focus to his friends Thaddeus Badger and Oliver Possum, giving the world a bit more room to breathe.
The genius here is in the pacing. Early chapter books can often feel dry—lots of simple sentences and repetitive structures—but Reynolds keeps the tension high. The plot moves quickly from a relatable 'eat your veggies' moment to a full-blown vegetable uprising.
Peter Brown’s illustrations are, as always, the secret sauce. By sticking to a limited color palette (black, white, and a very specific, glowing green), he creates a visual identity that is instantly recognizable. It feels cinematic. For a kid who might be intimidated by a page full of text, these illustrations serve as a bridge, keeping the 'movie' playing in their head as they read.
If your kid is a fan of The Bad Guys or InvestiGators, this is a slightly spookier alternative that still hits those same notes of humor and high-stakes friendship. It’s also a great choice for a read-aloud if you want something that will keep a 6-year-old on the edge of their seat without giving them actual nightmares.
