Trolls is a perfectly serviceable kids' movie that knows exactly what it is: a glittery, musical, merchandise-generating machine designed to entertain young children. And honestly? It succeeds at that goal.
The animation is distinctive, the energy is relentless, and kids in the target age range genuinely enjoy it. The happiness-comes-from-within message is good, even if it's delivered with all the subtlety of a glitter cannon. The musical numbers are fun, though mostly covers rather than original songs.
The downsides: it's LOUD and CHAOTIC in a way that can feel exhausting for adults and overwhelming for sensitive kids. It prioritizes spectacle over storytelling depth. And the Bergens-eating-Trolls premise is darker than it initially seems, even if it's handled with cartoon lightness.
This isn't going to win awards for enriching content, but it's not trying to. It's cotton candy—sweet, colorful, gone quickly, and fine in moderation. Your kids will probably want to watch it seventeen times. You'll survive, but maybe invest in good headphones.
