This is a cozy, slightly clunky time capsule. Long before Harry Potter became a global juggernaut, The Worst Witch was the standard for the magic-school genre. It’s a low-stakes, high-charm movie that feels like a recorded stage play, complete with a legendary, over-the-top performance by Tim Curry that has to be seen to be believed.
If you’re looking for a Halloween movie that won't cause nightmares or a 'safe' fantasy pick for a younger kid who feels like they can't do anything right, this is a solid choice. Just be prepared for your kids to point out every single 'fake' looking broomstick flight. It’s a great companion to the Jill Murphy books, which are still some of the best early-reader fantasy out there.
