The Water Horse is a gem. Dick King-Smith specializes in a specific kind of 'cozy adventure' that is becoming harder to find in modern children's fiction. It manages to be magical without needing a massive budget or a complicated magic system; it’s just a girl, a boy, and a very large, very hungry prehistoric creature.
If you're looking for a bedtime read that won't give them nightmares but will actually spark some conversation about nature and secrets, this is it. It’s significantly gentler and less 'Hollywood' than the 2007 movie adaptation, which is a win in our book.
