The Marsh King's Daughter is a competent but relentlessly grim thriller that lives in the shadow of better 'captivity' movies like Room. Daisy Ridley does solid work as a woman trying to outrun a past that literally has her name on it, but the movie often feels like it's checking boxes on a 'trauma thriller' list rather than saying something new.
If you're into survivalist lore or tracking-heavy suspense, there's enough here to keep you occupied for two hours. But for a family audience, the subject matter is a minefield. It’s a movie about the scars left by a monster, and it doesn't pull many punches in showing how those scars never quite heal.
