The Homework Machine is a rare 20-year-old book that feels like it was written for this exact week in 2026. It’s a tight, clever look at what happens when you find the ultimate shortcut and realize it might be ruining your brain.
It avoids being a preachy 'don't cheat' manual by making the machine genuinely tempting and the characters relatable. If your kid is starting to ask why they can't just let an AI write their book report, this is the exact book to put in their hands.
Perfect for the 8-12 crowd. It hits that sweet spot of 'school-life drama' mixed with a high-concept hook that works well for 3rd through 6th graders.
While the core plot involves cheating and deception, the narrative is built on the inevitable consequences and the evolving friendships between four very different kids. It models the idea that shortcuts usually cost more than they save.
The 'Belch' machine is a fun, slightly sci-fi concept for kids. The story is told through a series of police statements and journal entries, which is a clever way to keep the mystery moving.
This is a standard school-based middle-grade novel. No violence, language, or mature themes beyond the ethical dilemma of academic honesty.
In 2026, this book is more relevant than ever. It provides a perfect, low-stakes sandbox to talk about AI, outsourcing your thinking, and what the 'point' of school actually is.
Long before everyone had a generative AI in their pocket, Dan Gutman wrote about the 'Belch'—a machine that could scan a worksheet and spit out the answers in your own handwriting. In 2007, this was high-concept sci-fi for kids. In 2026, it’s basically Tuesday.
What makes the book hold up is the structure. It’s told through a series of 'testimony' snippets given to a grand jury or police investigator. This 'epistolary' style makes the plot feel urgent and keeps the pages turning. You aren't just reading a story; you're piecing together a crime.
We spend a lot of time worrying about kids 'outsourcing' their thinking to LLMs. This book tackles that head-on by showing the internal cost of the shortcut. The kids start to feel 'hollow' because they aren't actually learning the material, and the social pressure of keeping the secret starts to fracture their friendships.
It’s also a great study in archetypes. You have Brenton (the genius), Sam (the slacker), Judy (the overachiever), and Kelsey (the rebel). Watching these four social opposites bond over a shared 'crime' is the heart of the book. It’s more of a friendship story than a tech story, which is why it hasn't aged out of relevance despite the 2007 hardware descriptions.
If you have a kid who struggles to sit through a 300-page novel, Gutman is a master of the 'short chapter' hook. The format—brief statements from different characters—is very digestible. It’s the kind of book a kid can finish in a weekend and actually want to talk about afterward.
