The Dad Lab is one of the better YouTube channels for kids, which is a low bar, but Sergei Urban genuinely clears it. With 5+ million subscribers and over 3 billion views, he's clearly struck a chord—and for good reason.
The content is wholesome without being saccharine, educational without being boring, and most importantly, it models the kind of parent-child interaction we actually want to encourage. Sergei isn't performing for the camera; he's genuinely having fun doing science with his boys.
The experiments are accessible (you're not buying specialized equipment), replicable (kids can actually do these), and educational (real science, not just flashy reactions). The channel has spawned a successful book series, which tells you parents found enough value to want an offline version.
That said, it's still YouTube. Comments are on, autoplay lurks, and one video can lead to 47 others. This isn't a "set it and forget it" situation. Watch together, or at minimum, be nearby. Better yet, use it as inspiration and then close the laptop and actually do the experiments.
The WISE score of 82 reflects that tension: excellent content delivered through a platform that requires active parenting. If you're looking for science content for kids, this is near the top of the YouTube heap. Just remember that the best outcome is when the video ends and the real experimenting begins.
