Let's be honest: The Phantom Menace is the Star Wars movie everyone loves to dunk on, and for good reason. It's slow, the dialogue is wooden, and Jar Jar Binks is... a choice. The trade dispute framing is baffling for a kids' adventure movie.
But here's the thing—if your kid is deep into Star Wars, they need to see it. The Darth Maul fight alone justifies its existence, and understanding Anakin's origin makes the whole saga click. Just know you're signing up for a 136-minute slog with pockets of genuine excitement.
The real question is whether a modern kid—raised on Marvel pacing and Pixar storytelling—can tolerate a 1999 green-screen fest about trade routes. Many will bounce off it hard. If you're introducing Star Wars for the first time, start with the original trilogy or even The Mandalorian. Come back to this one when they're already hooked and curious about the backstory.
It's not unwatchable, but it's definitely a homework assignment more than a joy.
